Tonbridge High Street works delayed by a month

The completion of major works in Tonbridge High Street has been pushed back a month due to a delay in the delivery of paving bricks.

The regeneration project, which is currently three weeks behind schedule, was due to be completed by the end of this month.

But a Kent County Council spokesman today confirmed completion is now estimated at the end of May.

They added: “We have unfortunately run into an unforeseen delay receiving some paving bricks from one of our suppliers.

“We will be working swiftly on other areas for completion with the temporary one-way traffic management anticipated to be removed mid-May and scheme completion at the end of May.”

The £2.65m scheme fell behind schedule before Christmas, but bosses said extra teams of workers would be brought in to address concerns.

As the works enter their final weeks a series of overnight road closures will also be put in place.

From Monday the High Street will close from Bordyke southbound.

All traffic approaching Bordyke for the High Street and side roads off it will be directed along the A227 to Cannon Lane round the industrial estate towards Vale Road roundabout to access the High Street from the south.

In addition, night-time closures will be in effect on Monday and Tuesday from 7pm until 7am to allow for surfacing work.

During this time vehicles can access the High Street and side roads through the manned closure points. Drivers are asked to follow diversion signs.

Work commenced on the scheme in August 2015, as part of a regeneration project delivered by Kent County Council in partnership with Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council.

It aims to enhance the town’s main shopping area.

Further overnight road closures to apply the final surface are provisionally booked for May, 3, 4 and 5.

A KCC spokesman added: “The project is reaching its final stages with a raised table area and resurfacing of the carriageway still to take place.

“This requires extended one way working and night time closures. We apologise for the inconvenience caused throughout the work and we all are looking forward to the completed high quality finished product.”
