He can no longer act as a solicitor after the body said it has “reason to suspect dishonesty” by Mr Lyons and his wife Kelly Lyons, who is an employee at the firm.

It closed down the company, which will not be reopening, “to protect the interests of his clients and former clients”.

The investigation will look at whether Mr and Mrs Lyons broke accounting rules under the Solictors Act.

The regulator has taken possession of all documents and papers held by the firm, including clients’ papers, and has taken control of all money held by the business.

Mr Lyons must now wait to find out if disciplinary proceedings will be launched, which could lead to a fine of up to £2,000 or more if the matter is referred to an independent tribunal.

Lyons Solicitors has been trading since 2005 and claimed it had been “built on a culture that is creative, supportive and straightforward”.

It said on its website, which appears to have been taken down, that it specialised in “a wide range of legal issues” including personal injury claims and residential and commercial property.

It added: “We thrive on the diverse nature of our clients’ problems and finding ways to support your objectives.

“Our vision is to provide all our clients with an exceptional service in a law firm that is excited about personal commitment and thinking beyond boundaries.”

The Solicitors Regulation Authority has appointed Devonshires Solicitors as an agent to deal with all matters currently held by Lyons Solicitors.

The agent will assess all on-going matters and deal with those of greatest need first.

It said clients of Lyons Solicitors do not need to contact either the agent or the regulator at this time.
