A leisure centre in Sandwich is set to be transformed with a £160,000 refurbishment.

Sandwich MP Craig Mackinlay visited the centre, operated by Freedom Leisure, to show support for future developments and met trustees Mike Elmes, Roy Elliott and Andrew Jefferson.

Mr Mackinlay said: “I’m very pleased to hear of the approved forthcoming £160,000 investment for a refurbishment and upgrade of the existing fitness room, main hall and shower facilities by Freedom Leisure.”

The trustees were able to share their plans with Mr Mackinlay. They include indoor studio facilities, therapy rooms, a dedicated spin room and the expansion of the weights and resistance training facilities.

Eventually the plan is to provide extra car parking for customers, a floodlit artificial grass hockey pitch and an indoor swimming pool.

Brad Holland, fitness instructor at Sandwich Leisure, said: “Our cardiovascular machines will boast the most advanced, open Android-based user platforms in the market.

“It allows people to view their training programmes, access their favourite content and interact with friends via social media sites while working out.

“As well as new Technogym treadmills, upright bikes, seated bikes and cross-trainers, we are also introducing the very popular Technogym varios and cross-overs. All new cardiovascular equipment will also be Wi-fi enabled.”

The spin area will be moved downstairs to create a specialised spin studio, complete with new air conditioning.

This will also allow the leisure centre to extend the free weights area in the gym.

The refurbishment will start on Monday, July 20, and last five days.

During this time the gym will be closed, but classes and the rest of the centre will run as normal.

Pre-paid members will be able to use Aylesham Welfare Freedom Leisure Centre during the gym closure.
