Driver improving in hospital after BMW hits tree in Twydall Lane, Gillingham

A seriously-injured driver is said to be improving in hospital after crashing his car into a tree in a road in Gillingham.

The accident happened in Twydall Lane at about 6am this morning and no other vehicles were involved.

Kent Police closed between London Road and Wilmington Way while accident investigators examine the scene. It was re-opened at 11.20am.

Driving instructor, Martin Philbrick was on a lesson when he came across the crash scene.

Speaking earlier, he said: “The road is closed near Romany Road and there were officers there carrying out forensic work.

“The car is a BMW and it has hit a tree in the road.

A spokesman for Kent Police added: “The man was taken to hospital at 6.30am and has serious injuries.” Police later said the man's condition was improving. It is not known how old the driver is.
