Herne Bay housing, sports, and superstore developments to be decided by council planning committee

Herne Bay MP Sir Roger Gale says a decision to reject plans for new homes and sports facilities on the site of the former golf club would be “inexcusable”.

He was speaking ahead of the crucial Canterbury City Council planning committee meeting tomorrow night (Tuesday), where councillors will vote on the plans.

It will also decide the future of whether a new Sainsbury’s supermarket will be built at the Altira Business Park, and whether a new pedestrian crossing at Blacksole Bridge will be built.

Council officers have recommended that the committee rejects Quinn Estates’ proposals for 570 homes, sports facilities and business units due to concerns about traffic, road networks and school construction.

But Sir Roger has urged councillors to ignore the recommendation. He said: “I am most supportive of the Quinn Estates proposals for the redevelopment of Herne Bay Golf course.

“I have studied the plans with care. I believe they will bring employment, much-needed high-quality housing, and create excellent sporting facilities.

“If they were they not supported by a developer, they would be unaffordable. These facilities will be of very considerable value to Herne Bay and beyond. I would therefore hope that CCC officers will reflect upon their recommendation.

“The loss of a potential Grammar School to serve the young people of Herne Bay was disappointing and avoidable. But the rejection of an opportunity to acquire first-rate sports facilities for the town would be inexcusable.”

The meeting will take place at Canterbury’s Guildhall next to the Westgate Towers at 6.30pm. We will also have an exclusive report from the meeting in Thursday’s Herne Bay Gazette.
