Refurbishment of Royal Wells Hotel complete and new jobs have been created

The Royal Wells Hotel in Tunbridge Wells has reopened following a £2.4 million transformation by Shepherd Neame.

It is the single largest refurbishment project to date for Britain’s oldest brewer, which took over the hotel in September 2012.

The extensive programme of work included replacing the restaurant with The Brasserie, a spacious orangery which can accommodate up to 70 diners.

Guests can also enjoy alfresco dining in the new courtyard garden, which offers seating for up to 52 people.

The hotel’s reception area has been refurbished and the layout changed.

The chefs incorporate local seasonal produce, including the fresh fruit and vegetables for which the Garden of England is renowned, and seafood from Griggs of Hythe, and meat from J C Rook and Sons, both Kent family firms.

Four additional en-suite bedrooms have been added to the hotel, taking the total to 27, and every room has been refurbished in a contemporary style.

The hotel’s Ephraim Suite on the ground floor has been expanded, and can cater for parties of up to 150 when combined with the adjoining Victoria Room.

As a result of the brewery’s investment, 20 new roles have been created at the hotel, taking the total to more than 50.

It is expected more employees will be taken on in the next few months to cope with increased demand during the summer season.

Queen Victoria made frequent visits to the hotel in the early part of the 19th century and later granted the use of her coat of arms, which is displayed at the top of the building.

The refurbishment project also included restoring this historic artefact to its former glory.

Shepherd Neame chief executive Jonathan Neame said: “We are thrilled to unveil this exciting new development in Royal Tunbridge Wells. It is our biggest refurbishment to date, and represents a massive investment not just in the hotel, but the local area.

"We have created a number of new hospitality and catering roles, and are confident that the new look hotel will prove a popular destination for leisure and business guests, providing a boost for the town.”
