After installing the first project at Simon Langton Grammar School, Canterbury, back in 2012, Pavegen have now installed over 130 projects in 30 countries on every continent.

The latest project will power two street lamps in The City, after new tiles have been installed just outside the tube station at Canary Wharf.

Founded by Laurence Kemball-Cook, who comes from Canterbury, the only way is up for this innovative business.

Pavegen last week launched a campaign to help more cities implement the idea and the sheer number the Crowdcube page has generated is shocking – with 535 new investors contributing in less than 60 hours.

The total raised currently stands at over £1 million, completely blitzing the £750,000 target.

The business now looks set to substantially overfund with 37 days still remaining on the crowdfunding campaign.

Laurence Kemball-Cook, CEO and founder of Pavegen, saw the potential in harnessing energy by footfall in urban environments – areas where solar and wind power would not be substantial.

He said: “It’s been an amazing journey. The support we’ve received from the public has been overwhelming. I’m grateful for each investment that has brought us closer towards our final goals.

"We’re hoping to reach out to the crowd over the course of the campaign; if we can raise £750k in 2 days, imagine what we could accomplish over the next 38.”

The work the 30-strong team of designers, engineers and innovators carry out has even been recognised by one of the most intelligent men on the planet; Professor Stephen Hawking, who said the technology has the ability “radically change the way we source power in the future”.
