Deal's nightclub Rivals undergoes refurb before opening night on Good Friday

Rivals nightclub will re-open its doors on Easter Bank Holiday, under new ownership and with an entirely fresh brand.

A full refurbishment is under way at the dilapidated building in Queen Street, with the single aim of bringing people to Deal from near and far.

New owners Media Leisure Ltd are brainstorming new names for the two bars, formerly called the Academy and Rivals, and they have opened up the arena to Mercury readers to submit your suggestions to us.

Owner Paul Blair is recruiting staff but would not disclose the cost of the refurbishment programme. He suggested the initial revamp is “mid six figures”.

The tally to achieve his total vision could run close to £1m.

His tall ambition includes a plush VIP lounge that will transform one of the former Flics cinema screening rooms behind the bar on the top floor.

And an awe inspiring lights display is top on Mr Blair’s list too.

“I want it to be more like a firework display,” he said. “ Something that we don’t have anywhere else in the country that people will come to Deal to see.”

Despite his enthusiasm, the property developer does not want to give too much away, but he has high hopes for the Academy bar. In the meantime, a new decor is underway and booth seating will be installed.

Mr Blair said he has been in the running to buy the building since about March last year, after Rivals mysteriously closed without any warning.

“They wanted £110,000 for it. I didn’t pay that,” he said.

He has worked in many areas of nightclubs including DJing, running bars and he has renovated properties galore. His reason for coming to Deal is: “I was bored. I’m an achiever and I like a challenge.”

“It’s not just about the money,” he said “I’m very community and charity minded.

“I have already joined the Rotary Club.”
