Whitstable: Royal Mail confirms sale of former sorting office site in Cromwell Road

Royal Mail has confirmed it has completed the sale of a former delivery office site in Whitstable.

The site has been purchased by developer Landminster Distribution and is set to become to home to 22 flats and a supermarket.

Plans were given the nod by Canterbury City Council in April - a year after the Royal Mail service ceased to operate from Cromwell Road.

Royal Mail spokesman Sally Hopkins said: "Royal Mail is committed to ensuring it derives the maximum value for the disposal of any property it no longer needs for its operational use.

"The proceeds from any disposal of surplus property are invested in improving services to customers.

"This was part of Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation of its business and work to increase the efficiency of our operation as well as providing delivery offices that are fit for purpose for our staff and for our customers."

The delivery operation transferred from Whitstable to Canterbury in May 2013 while the inquiry office continued to operate from the site until April 2014.

Landminster launched the application in June last year to demolish the former sorting office and Chaucer House storage unit - replacing them with a mixed-use building with flats and 371 square metres of commercial and associated storage space.
