Plans for student flats to go on show at former Franciscan International Study Centre in Canterbury

Plans to redevelop a former Christian adult school will go on display for the first time next week.

Property investor Empiric will hold an exhibition of its proposals to turn the old Franciscan International Study Centre in Canterbury into student flats.

The plans also feature an “amenity space”, games room, work and reading rooms, a gym and offices.

Residents will be able to give their views on the proposals and meet members of the project team, including architects and planners.

Empiric aims to submit a planning application early next year.

It bought the site on Giles Lane for £5.8 million in July.

At the time, it said it planned to create a mix of studios, two and three-bed apartments and six-bed townhouses.

It said a separate 16,200 sq ft building on the three-acre site has “development potential”.

The deal is the second acquisition the company has made in the city, after it bought the 79-bed Pavillion Court apartment block above a Sainsbury’s store for £9.2 million in September.

Empiric chief information officer Tim Attlee said: “We have been developing our proposals since acquiring the site in summer 2017, and are now ready to share our thoughts with the local community.

"We would encourage everyone to come along, view the plans and let us know what they think.”

The public event will be held on site at the Franciscan International Study Centre on Tuesday, December 5 from 3pm to 7.30pm.
