Young people can find a job and learn about careers at KentChoices4u at Kent County Showground, Detling

There is just a week to go until the careers fair KentChoices4u Live, a gathering of hundreds of companies offering jobs to school leavers and people looking for a career change.

As young people are all too aware, picking a career can be a difficult task.

Where are the best opportunities? How do you qualify? What if you don’t like what you choose?

In the past, a careers advisor at school has been a good bet to explain options but with the jobs landscape changing dramatically, and youth unemployment still high, it is tough to know where to turn.

Yet no one denies there is talent out there and there is a shortage of skilled workers in construction, engineering and many other industries.

Many companies are turning to apprenticeships again to grow their future workforce and are on the look out for the right candidates.

Next week, businesses representing more than 250 careers will gather under one roof to find the next generation of workers at KentChoices4u Live – and you could get hired.

More than 6,000 people will walk through the doors at the two day fair at Kent County Showground, Detling, eager to take that first step on the career ladder or find a new vocation.

Many employers will be ready to offer apprenticeships at the event so be prepared to make a good impression.

There will be an apprenticeship zone, where guests can find out what it means to be an apprentice, and how to find opportunities in Kent. These come from a range of roles, each considered a growth sector in the county, including:

  • construction and the built environment
  • land based
  • transport and logistics
  • creative, cultural and media, and the visitor economy
  • engineering and advanced manufacturing
  • life sciences and healthcare
  • environmental technologies and energy.

The event, now in its fourth year, is organised by Kent County Council and Medway Council in partnership the KM Group. In the past it has attracted celebrities like Jools Holland and Olympic champion Lizzie Yarnold.
