Tunbridge Wells New Look mannequin sparks outrage over 'unrealistic' size

A size 0 mannequin placed in a New Look store has sparked outrage among shoppers.

Two women who were especially shocked when they spotted the 'unrealistic' dummy in the window of the brand's Tunbridge Wells shop have shared their disgust online.

Louise Jean and Sarah Hayter posted their complaints on New Look's Facebook page, and their views have been echoed by many others.

Louise, from Tudeley, posted an image of the mannequin and said: "I don't really have many words about this New Look, but something seriously has to change. Please sort it out. ?#‎unrealisticexpectations?"

Sarah did the same hours later and commented: "So this is a mannequin in your store - personally think this gives out the WRONG message - especially to younger girls."

Other shoppers have backed the complaints. Sophie Elizabeth Evans labelled the mannequin 'disgusting' and 'ridiculous.

Jan Humphries added: "Wow, well done Sarah !!! Now maybe you could get the message through to some of these celebrity /fashion magazines that are such a dangerous influence on our youngsters."

Others defended the high-street brand, Jodie Rose said: "Personally I think retailers can't win with whatever size mannequins they have they're either too skinny or too fat and people complain because its going to make children or anyone decide they want to be the same size as a legless headless plastic torso."

A spokesman from New Look has responded to both complaints. A statement said: "We appreciate you bringing this feedback to our attention. It will enable us to resolve this as quickly as possible.

"We hear and understand your concerns and I'm pleased to tell you that the decision has been made to remove the mannequin from display at the Tunbridge Wells store at Longfield Road with immediate effect.

"We are also going to start an investigation to ensure this style of mannequin isn't used in any other stores or is removed as appropriate. At New Look we would never want to encourage women to aim for an unhealthy or unattainable image or life style.

"The issues raised will be treated with high priority in order to prevent any further distress."
