Kent has been put on heatwave alert as the county prepares to sizzle on what is expected to be the hottest weekend of the year.

The Met Office issued a heat health warning as forecasters predict the mercury will rise to more than 30 Celsius in some parts.

There is said to be a 60% chance of a heatwave in the region over the weekend.

It will be the second weekend in a row that most of the county basks in glorious summer weather.

Families are expected to flock to Kent's seaside resorts and events, including the Kent County Show at Detling, which runs until Sunday.

The Met Office alerts - the first of the summer - are designed to protect vulnerable people, such as young children, very old people and those who are unwell, from the effects of a heatwave.

Run in association with the Department of Health, the Heat-Health Watch system operates up until September 15.
