Attack victim in fight for life

A MAN was today still fighting for his life after being violently assaulted. The victim was found lying in Gun Lane, Strood, with severe head injuries.

Police at first thought he was the victim of a hit and run accident. But later it emerged that the 40-year-old man had been attacked by a driver who got out of a white van at about 9.15pm on Saturday.

The man was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham but later transferred to a specialist head injuries unit in West Sussex. The assault took place outside the Newark flats and police are appealing for witnesses.

Priory Road was closed between Cuxton Road and Frindsbury Hill by police all day yesterday as they combed the area for evidence.

Anyone with information should call the special incident room at police headdquarters in Maidstone on 01622 690690.
