Blaze could take almost a week to put out

A fire which started in woods in Luddesdown, near Cuxton, will probably burn for the rest of the week.

Firefighters were at the scene for most of the weekend, after a car was driven into a huge pile of rotting debris and set alight.

The pile is garden waste including wood chippings and other material.

Crews from Thames-side, Medway and other fire stations have taken turns to monitor the pile, which covers about 200ft and is 20ft high.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said yesterday: “We’ve been monitoring it since midnight Friday, it is deep-seated, but not out of control.

“Unfortunately it gives out a lot of smoke, so much so, we’ve had a lot of calls from people who say they can see and smell smoke, but can’t work out where it is coming from.”
