Around 20 shells and anti-submarine depth charges have been found off Sheppey - believed to be the biggest haul of its kind ever.

Officers from the Royal Navy's Explosive Ordnance Department (EOD) were alerted to the haul on Sunday by Sheppey Coastguard after a member of the public saw a suspect device.

Seven devices were found at around 6am on Monday, including a 10lb shell, two anti-submarine depth charges and three high-explosive mortar shells.

Police formed a cordon around the scene, but the midday operation was hampered by one craft entering the exclusion zone created by Thames Coastguard.

By this morning the tally had risen to 20 devices - making it probably the largest find of its kind in the area.
