A collision between a coach and two other vehicles just before 8.30am partially blocked the coastbound carriageway at the A28 Thanington Road junction at Wincheap.

Children travelling on the coach were not injured and were transferred to another vehicle before being taken to safety.

A second crash involving two cars then took place in the backlog of traffic, before a van and two other cars also collided soon after.

Five minor injuries were reported from the three crashes.

A rolling road block was put in place following reports that petrol spilled on to the road surface.

Traffic stretched as far back as the A2050 junction at Harbledown.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Kent on Wednesday, traffic through the Channel Tunnel was delayed by about 90 minutes when a shuttle train broke down.

Engineers were called to carry out repairs in the tunnel and fire crews also attended as a back-up.

A spokesman for Eurotunnel said it was a technical incident, not an emergency situation.
