Jeremy Corbyn in Kent: Labour leader slams Theresa May and Donald Trump alliance

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has made an outspoken attack on his political rivals claiming that they offered only slogans and no solutions to the problems facing ordinary people.

Mr Corbyn was speaking to activists at the party’s south east regional conference in Ashford today.

He was loudly cheered when he reaffirmed the party's pledge to renationalise rail services, saying that that Southeastern services were not much better than the much-maligned Southern services.

"To those who commute on Southern Rail, I offer you this pledge: Labour will bring the railways into public control and remove the incompetent privateers who have leeched public investment and the highest fares in Europe into directors’ bonuses and shareholder payouts."

He also pledged investment in Kent's coastal areas like Thanet, promising they would "not be left behind" and would benefit from a regional investment fund - again, another commitment he has made before.

"Especially in this county … we need to restore pride and prosperity to many of the coastal towns that have been left behind … Where the Tories neglect, we will invest."

He told the conference: "One thing is for sure: neither billionaire Donald Trump, nor the billionaire-backed Tories, have any interest in giving people back
control, or reining in the predatory excesses of a globalised
free-for-all.

'We have no idea how Donald Trump proposes to 'make America great again'

"We have no idea how Donald Trump proposes to 'make America great again', and Theresa May's Tories offer slogans, but no solutions, for most people in Britain.”

He also attacked Ukip and its interim leader Nigel Farage, saying: “Nigel Farage blames immigrants, yet offers not a single proposal to put a penny more into the NHS.”

Mr Corbyn’s visit comes after a string of council by-elections in Kent that have reflected mixed fortunes for the party.

He drew on the victory of Mr Trump to say that while he identified common problems - such as under-funded public services and stagnating wages - he offered no solutions.

“He offered only someone to blame - everyone, that is, apart from those who are actually responsible for a broken economy and a failed political system.”
