Cranbrook is UK's worst broadband blackspot

Cranbrook has the worst broadband speeds in the UK, according to a new survey.

Figures released by uSwitch.com reveal the sleepy medieval town hardly makes it onto the slip road of the internet superhighway.

With average download speeds of just 1.32Mb, Cranbrook is five times slower than the national average.

It is also 14 times slower than the UK's fastest town - Leamington Spa, according to the research.

Kent and Sussex generally have been highlighted as the worst counties for broadband speeds.

The figures, based on almost 400,000 home broadband speed tests earlier this summer, show it would take around 45 minutes to download just one music album - and a frustrating 12 hours to download a movie.

Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch.com, said: "This is black and white evidence that thousands of homes are making dow with download speeds well below the national average, and suggests that the British broadband is failing to deliver.

"Fast broadband speeds should be available to everyone, not just for those people living in heavily urbanised areas."

The survey comes just months after Farningham in north Kent was recognised as the worst in the UK.

In a study by broadband comparison site Top10.com, the picture postcard village of Farningham notched up speeds of a paltry 1.3Mb.

Earlier this week, the government announced a near £10 million cash injection to boost broadband speeds in the county.

But Kent County Council said the cash was only available if the authority ploughed in a further £32m.
