Connor McLaren’s first Welling goal was enough to send them through to the first round of the FA Trophy.

McLaren struck with 71 minutes gone in Sunday’s third qualifying round tie at Cray Wanderers.

Welling had several chances to open the scoring in the first half, with Kurtis Guthrie heading Jamie Day’s cross against the woodwork.

Keeper Sam Mott, pictured, had to pull off a great save to deny Chris Saunders, after a melee in the box led to the Cray substitute hitting the target.

But with around 20 minutes left, McLaren netted what turned out to be the winner after being picked out by Theo Fairweather-Johnson.

The latter stages of the game saw chances for both teams. Lewis Bremmer fired the ball against the post for Cray, while Welling’s Joe Healy had a header cleared off the line.
