Kent passengers warned of major disruption after fire at Charing Cross Station in London cancels trains

Rail services in Kent are facing major disruption following a fire at Charing Cross Station in London.

Trains to Dartford, Gravesend, Sevenoaks and Hayes have already been cancelled.

A Southeastern spokesman confirmed around 100 people were evacuated from Charing Cross Station as a result of the fire.

It happened on board the 10.55am service to Robertsbridge, while it was in platform six.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire, which is understood to have happened underneath the train as a result of a technical fault.

It is hoped normal service will be resumed by the end of the day.

“All trains that would usually come into Charing Cross were diverted to London Bridge or Victoria Street Station,” said a Southeastern spokesman.

“It means trains are in the wrong places and it will take a few hours to get the trains back into position to run normal services.

“We are hoping to have services that would normally leave from platform six to leave from the soon to be opened platforms one to four.”

Southeastern said all services running via Charing Cross may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

A statement on its website said: “If you are travelling further south than Orpington please make your way to London Victoria.

"If you are travelling towards Dartford and Hayes please make your way to London Bridge.

"You can use your tickets on London Underground services between all London Terminals.

"Tickets are also being accepted on Southern services anywhere between Hastings and London on all reasonable routes.”
