Dinghys and dogs, parachutists and powerboats - regatta promises fun for all

Dragon boats, parachutists, powerboats and Royal Marine Commandos will be among the attractions at this year’s Dover Regatta which celebrates its 10th anniversary next weekend.

Since its inception, the event has grown to become one of the largest free events in the area.

This year sees the introduction of some new attractions alongside the old favourites.

Saturday, August 2, will see Dover Harbour full of action with dragon boat racing, powerboat racing as well as dinghy and yacht taster sessions and racing.

The air-sea rescue helicopter and the Dover lifeboat will work together for a demonstration of a rescue at sea.

On Sunday, August 3, there will be displays by the newfoundland dogs, dinghy and yacht taster sessions and, for the first time this year, the powerboats will provide a display close to the shore just before the Parade of Sail.

The Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Admiral the Lord Boyce, will take the salute as the procession of waterbourne craft passes the commentary point. Following the parade of sail the sea swimmers compete in a two-kilometre sea swim.

Meanwhile, on land there will be French and Latin markets, displays of unarmed combat by the Royal Marines Commandos, children’s entertainment and circus skills and craft workshops.

Dennis Kenyon will be demonstrating the agility of his helicopter and Skycharter UK Ltd will be providing pleasure flights over Dover on both days.

The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment Tigers parachute display team will be dropping in on Sunday afternoon.

The Just Unique roadshow will provide commentary on all the events and a stage for some live music, as well as hosting a beach party which finishes with a firework display on Saturday evening.

Christians Together in Dover will provide a fitting end to the regatta with Songs of Praise on Sunday afternoon.
