Fire breaks out in fish and chip shop

A chip shop was badly damaged by fire on Saturday.

The blaze broke out in the kitchen at Allways Fryday takeaway in Sutton Road, Maidstone, at about 12.15pm.

Two pumps from Maidstone and one from Medway attended with firefighters having to wear breathing apparatus to enter the two-storey building.

Two residents living in a flat above the shop were evacuated while crews fought the flames.

The fire was extinguished by 1.25pm but crews remained at the scene to dampen down hotspots.

The kitchen was completely gutted in the fire.

The flat above also suffered fire and smoke damage.

It is not yet known what caused the blaze.

The takeaway's owners have said the shop will be closed for "several weeks" for "redecoration."
