Firefighters called to tyre blaze

Thick black smoke could be seen in Gillingham last night as a pile of around 100 tyres was on fire.

A crew and one pump from Medway fire station was called to Lidsing Road at 9pm yesterday, Sunday.

The firefighters had to use a compressed air foam unit to stifle the blaze at the locked yard opposite The Harrow pub.

It is unclear how the fire started.

The same crews also had two car fires to deal with during the night.

At 9.10pm a Citroen Picasso was totally destroyed in a fire thought to have been started deliberately.

The car was found in a car park at Lordswood Industrial Estate, Chatham.

Crews took one pump to the scene and left at around 10pm.

Another car fire was reported just after 1am after a Ford Escort van shorted, damaging its wiring.

It is believed the van's battery was the cause of the fire.

Fire fighters were at the scene for around 30 minutes.
