Fluent jumping pays off for 10-1 shot

THE warmest day of Spring so far attracted another bumper crowd to the Penshurst point-to-point where the Old Surrey Burstow & West Kent Hunt held their second meeting.

Undoubtedly the surprise result of the day came in the Hiscox Final qualifier Intermediate Race when the Tindall owned Sanamour took the honours and returned at the remarkable odds of 10-1, beating the odds-on favourite Jac An Ree who was pulled up.

Chris Gordon kicked Sanamour to the front of the five runners with a circuit to run and with his fluent jumping won comfortably by five lengths on the line.

The Men's Open turned out to be another success for the Gorman family when their Old Kilminchy, the 11-10 favourite, easily beat the second favourite Indoux by some

20 lengths with Chief Chippie a distant third. This puts Old Kilminchy and Cape Stormer, both owned and ridden by Marcus Gorman well into contention for the leading horse award.

Carryonharry showed his class once again winning the Ladies Open, following up his winning debut at Bexhill two weeks ago. He probably had more in hand than the four lengths win from Cedar Chief, with Lord Euro a further four lengths back.

The Club Members race produced the closest finish of the meeting with Perange just getting his nose in front on the line to win by the official distance of a short head.

The largest field of the day with nine runners was the Maiden race. Another Classic ridden by Chris Gordon went off the even money favourite but at the third fence the field was reduced to six when Cleverest fell bringing down Witherinton and Naranjita, but fortunately all horses and jockeys got to their feet unscathed. Another Classic took up the running with Soldershire ridden by Harriet Carroll having only her third ride close on his heels. With five fences remaining event rider Carroll decided to take up the running and Gordon was unable to head the novice rider and she duly went on to win by a distance. Owned by James Etheridge, the horse was purchased from trainer Simon Dow.

This weekend there will be another double header with Chiddingfold, Leaconfield and Cowdrey Hunt holding their meeting on Saturday, April 29, at Parham with a six race card starting at 2pm preceded by two pony races at 10.30pm.

Then on Monday, May 1, the West Street, Tickham, hold the second of the two fixtures, this one at Aldington, starting at 2pm.

Inevitably there will be a number of horses entered at both meetings allowing owners the chance to chose whichever may be the easier race or the ground which suits their particular horse.

The West Street Tickham have a good entry and both the Men’s and Ladie’s races have some of the best horses in the area entered. Twice winner Carryonharry could well be in the line up for the ladies’ and might well take on Sheriff’s Friend. Millennium Way is also entered but as he ran in a Hunters’ Chase at Stratford on Sunday, where he finished third, he may be doubtful here. Stylish Dave is also a possibility so this could be race of the day. For the Men’s Cape Stormer and The Honourable Spider look the pick but also entered here is Sheriff’s Friend and if he runs, I prefer the latter. Magnolia could well take the Confined with Magnus Veritus the danger. The Restricted has Napolita entered and if declared will sure to go close.

Large crowds are expected and race goers are advised to arrive in good time to avoid delays.
