Gillingham striker Adam Birchall impressed boss Martin Allen after making his long-awaited full debut on Saturday.

Birchall played the whole match against Preston after starting a competitive game in Gillingham colours for the first time since signing from Dover in July 2011.

Allen said: "I probably get asked 10 times a week ‘when is he actually going to get to start a game?’ I thought it was a great opportunity for him to come in and do his stuff.

"He is sharp in and around the box and in training he keeps scoring goals. He is an absolute pleasure to work with and it was a great opportunity to put him into the team.

"He showed what he can do. He was sharp, he was lively and he was very patient waiting for the chance. I was absolutely delighted with him."
