Firefighters have warned parents not to leave children alone in the kitchen - after a two-year-old sparked a hob blaze.

The youngster is said to have accidentally started the fire in her home in Greenhithe.

Two crews from Dartford were sent to the first floor High Street flat at 10.12am on Wednesday after the child's mother was alerted by the smoke alarm.

They found the small kitchen fire, believed to have been started after the two-year-old old girl accidentally turned the hob on.

It caused items on top to catch fire, leaving the oven surround damaged and causing heat and smoke damage to the rest of the kitchen.

The child’s mother suffered from smoke inhalation and was given oxygen therapy at the scene by firefighters. The child escaped unhurt.

Dartford crew manager Vicki Brown, who attended the incident, said: "Children of this age are obviously unaware of the potential dangers of fire and it is for that reason that we urge all parents not to leave young children on their own in any room where there is a fire risk.
