Headcorn pub damaged in blaze

Fire has swept through a pub in Headcorn.

The White Horse pub in North Street went up in flames just after 6pm yesterday.

Kent Fire and Rescue received a call saying a blaze had started in the kitchen and people were trapped inside the building.

Three engines, two from Maidstone and one from Headcorn, attended.

By 6.28pm it was confirmed that no one was inside the burning two storey building.

A spokesman for the fire service said half the ground floor was damaged and the rest of the building was moderately damaged by smoke.

Firefighters were also called to a fire in Maidstone last night.

A woman was led to safety by fire crews after a fire broke out in a block of flats in Ragstone Lodge, Peel Street, Maidstone.

Two crews from Maidstone were called to attend at about 9.15pm after an occupant in one of the flats smelt smoke and called 999.

One woman was treated at the scene by ambulance crews.

It is not yet known how serious the fire was, but crews had left the scene by 10pm.
