A house in Gillingham was struck by lightning during freak storms.

The roof of the Hotel Road property was set alight by the strike at about 4.15pm Tuesday.

Firefighters from Gillingham and Medway went to the scene and spent around two hours putting out the flames. No one was in the house at the time.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Some wooden beams in the loft had caught alight.

"We put the fire out by entering the house and going through the loft hatch. There is a bit of fire and water damage to the loft area - but the rest of the house was saved."
