The husband of a woman killed by a hit and run driver has said his family have accepted they will never find the person responsible for her death.

John Leedham was speaking after the inquest into his wife Shirley's death, which was held on Tuesday.

Mrs Leedham, 70, was knocked down as she crossed the A20 in Harrietsham on October 9 last year.

The driver of the vehicle that hit her has never been traced.

The inquest heard how police had traced and spoken to all drivers captured on CCTV travelling down the A20 after the incident.

Witness Sonja White said she had heard the beeping of the crossing, which indicated it was safe to cross, shortly before hearing screeching brakes and a loud bang.

Mr Leedham said: "My family just wants closure now.

"We have come to the conclusion they will never find the person responsible so once we have the death certificate that will be our closure."

Sgt Guy Ditcher from Kent Police said the investigation was still active.

Coroner Roger Sykes said Mrs Leedham's death was from multiple injuries. He recorded a narrative verdict of the facts surrounding her death and ruled it was impossible to say if it was accidental death without hearing from the driver involved.
