Heavy rain in Kent set to return as Met Office issues severe weather warning

Kent is set to be hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms this afternoon as a severe weather warning remains in place.

The downpours are predicted to start at 4pm and will continue throughout the evening.

The Met Office's chief forecaster says as much as two inches of rain could fall in the worst-hit areas.

The warning on its website predicts the weather could also affect the county’s roads, with motorists advised to be cautious.

It adds: “A complex frontal system will run into southern Britain overnight, becoming slow-moving on Sunday.

“Warm, humid air on the south east of this boundary is likely to become the focus for thundery activity, some of it imported from northern France, leading to localised torrential downpours.”

The warning is currently in place between 4pm and 11.50pm today.
