Sam Billings is looking to build on his impressive one-day form from last summer when the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition gets underway on Monday.

The 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman forced his way into the Spitfires side in both 40-over and T20 competitions last summer and finished as the county’s highest run-scorer in non-championship cricket.

An innings of 143 from 113 balls against Derbyshire in the CB40 at Canterbury was one of the highlights of the Kent summer and gave Billings a place in the record books as the highest one-day total by a Kent batsman at the St Lawrence Ground.

Kent’s short-format campaign opens at Edgbaston on Monday (1.45pm) against the Warwickshire Bears with a floodlit game at Trent Bridge against the Nottinghamshire Outlaws on Wednesday (4.40pm) and Billings hopes to continue his role at the top of the order.

He said: "Throughout pre-season I’ve said my aim is to make it into the side in both one-day formats and while I don’t take anything for granted, I would be pretty disappointed if I am not involved.

"If I get the chance, I would like to build on last year and if possible improve on my average of 45.

"We missed out narrowly on the knockout stages last year, hopefully we can go one better this year."
