Remembrance Sunday events across Kent today

Young and old gathered in towns and villages across Kent today to remember those who gave their lives in the service of their country.

In Maidstone, scores lined the streets and the town came to a standstill as the annual Remembrance Sunday parade passed from County Hall to the Broadway war memorial.

The parade travelled down Week Street and arrived at the monument just before 11am.

Over in Deal, a remembrance ceremony organised by the Veterans’ Association of Deal took place at the war memorial at Deal Walmer & District War Memorial Hospital.

Ex-service organisations, dignitaries and residents were among those paying their respects.

Below are a selection of remembrance events happening throughout Kent today, with many local churches also holding services.

Ashford

Parking will be free in Vicarage Lane car park for those attending services at St Marys Church and the War Memorial.

Dartford and Gravesham

On Sunday November 9 Meopham will be holding a Parade and Remembrance Service by Meopham Green at 3pm.

The section of Steeles Lane that runs beside Meopham Green will be officially closed between 2pm and 4pm.

It is recommended that Meopham School, just 5 minutes walk away, be used for parking.

Canterbury district

Today there is a Remembrance Sunday service at Canterbury Cathedral, and in Herne Bay there is a service at Christ Church, William Street, starting at 9am.

A parade in Whiststable will start from Victoria Street car park at 10.30am to War Memorial in Oxford Street.

A memorial service starts at St Mary of Charity church at 10.30am.

Dover district

At the Western Docks a Torch of Remembrance service will be held at 9.30am. This will be followed by a remembrance service at theb Dover war memorial, starting at 10.30am.

A parade will proceed through Sandwich following a wreath laying at 10.45am, followed by a service at St Clement’s Church.

In Deal a service will take place at the war memorial in London Road at 10.45am.

Folkestone

People will gather at The War Memorial on The Leas for a service starting at 10:30 to 11:30.

Maidstone

At 10am there will be a parade starting at Week Street, to the Cenotaph on the Broadway. This will be followed by a remembrance service at the Town hall at 10.40am

Medway

There are opportunities to honour Medway’s servicemen and women at remembrance services being held across the Towns.

Remembrance Sunday will begin with the Royal Navy service at the Great Lines memorial followed by wreath-laying ceremonies at the war memorials in Gillingham, Rainham, Chatham, Rochester and Brompton. Many churches in Medway will also be holding services.

Free parking will be available at council car parks on Remembrance Sunday for those attending morning services.

Seven car parks will be free on Sunday, until 3pm. These are Rhode Street, James Street and Riverside in Chatham, Blue Boar Lane, Cathedral and Corporation Street in Rochester and Cricketers, Rainham.

Swale

At Sittingbourne War Memorial there is Remembrance Sunday services at 11am, and Donald Dean VC Stone Dedication Service at 2.30pm.

The Faversham parade begins at Queens Hall car park and willl proceed to the Stone Street memorial to lay wreaths.

Thanet

In Ramsgate a parade will start at Elms Avenue and will proceed to St George’s Church.

The service in Broadstairs will be held in front of Pierremont Hall from 10.30am to 11.30am

A parade will proceed though Margate from Zion Place, Cliftonville to the Trinity Square, war memorial, from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Tonbridge

There will be a remembrance service at Tonbridge Methodist Church at 10.30am
