Kent temperatures set to plummet to -6C

Kent is set to shiver over the next few days as the first chilly snap of the season pushes temperatures down to -6C.

The south east is likely to see sunshine but freezing temperatures today, with the mercury plummeting to below freezing, especially in rural areas.

Even during the day it's not likely to be higher than 8C across the south east.

Cold air from the continent is going to hit the south of the country with temperatures in Kent struggling to get much above freezing tomorrow and on Wednesday.

Forecasts suggest the UK could be facing the coldest winter for five years, with average minimum temperatures likely to fall below zero in some parts of the UK.

The 100mph winds which blow in an anti-clockwise circle in the stratosphere above the Arctic are called the polar vortex.
