M20 closed as man threatened to jump from bridge

A man threatened to jump from a bridge over the M20 on Tuesday night.

Police were called to the scene at junction one of the motorway, close to Farningham, at around 6pm.

By 7.10pm both carriageways were closed as police dealt with the incident.

One driver reported seeing cars reversing off the motorway as the carriageways were cleared by police.

The man was talked down from the bridge at 8.30pm.

A police statement read: "The man has been removed from the bridge and is now talking to police who will ensure the appropriate welfare is provided."

Kent Police thanked motorists for their patience during the incident.

Both carriageways were re-opened by 8.30pm.

It was the second major incident on the M20 that day after a lorry fire at junction two at 3pm.
