Man escapes from blazing flat

A man in his 60s is in hospital after fire broke out at a flat in Rochester last night.

The man suffered smoke inhalation in the blaze at the ground floor flat in Hoopers Road.

He woke up surrounded by flames and smoke but managed to get out of the property.

It' is thought the fire started in the front room and caused severe damage.

Fire crews were called at 8.15pm and spent two and a half hours putting out the blaze.

Six fire crews were sent to the five-storey house in Black Eagle Drive which is divided into flats.

Initially there were fears people were inside but no one was at the property.
