A MAN is being treated in hospital for serious head injuries following an assault in Chatham in the early hours of this morning.

Police and an ambulance crew were called to Fort Pitt Street at 4.40am after neighbours had heard shouts and cries for help.

The attack happened outside Priestdale Court and Medway Police are waiting to question two women about what happened. A resident living in nearby Rowan Walk said the incident followed a "heated argument" which had been going on for nearly an hour.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said she heard cries for help and called the police.

She said: "It was very loud. There had been raised voices and a male voice was definitely more prominent. You could hear tempers were rising and then I heard a woman screaming 'get an ambulance.'

"It all sounded very nasty. Police at the scene tried to calm the situation down. I could hear the police saying to the man, "Sit down, you've got a wound to the head."

A woman resident of Fort Pitt Street said: "I looked out of my window and could see a man lying in the street. Two policemen came and treated the victim with a first aid kit before the ambulance arrived."

A Medway Ambulance paramedic crew took the man to Medway Maritime Hospital. Meanwhile, police cordoned off the area and began looking for clues.
