Martin Allen admitted he was close to unleashing “the weapon” on Saturday.

The Gillingham boss included young left-back Sam Muggleton, pictured, among the substitutes at Morecambe.

The 17-year-old had twice previously been on the bench but with the Morecambe pitch in a poor condition, Allen had the youngster in the squad again as back-up.

Muggleton is understood to have a throw-in that can match and better anything Charlie Lee or Chris Whelpdale can muster.

Allen said: “The pitch was so muddy and we were going to use his weapon but we didn’t need it in the end.

“I call it the weapon and soon all the Gillingham supporters will see the weapon.”
