A memorial stone to mark the centenary of the first recorded flight in the country by a Briton was unveiled at the weekend.

Kenneth Bannerman from the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust (ABCT) donated and unveiled the stone at Muswell Manor, in Leysdown, on Sunday.

The stone marks the site where the founding fathers of British aviation, the Short Brothers and the Wright Brothers, met and flew from nearby marshland in 1909.

The event was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Swale Cllrs Alan and Jean Willicombe, the Sheppey Air Cadets, and people from the Island.

To mark the occasion a Spitfire was flown over Muswell Manor and Cllr Willicombe gave a speech about the history of aviation.

Sharon Munns, co-owner of Muswell Manor, said: “Today’s [Sunday] support has helped push forward the continuation in celebrating the centenary and with the added support of our Aviation Centenary Committee 2009 we will continue to work even harder to celebrate the forth coming centenary celebrations at Muswell Manor.”

There will be a weekend of celebrations at Muswell Manor on Saturday and Sunday, May 2,3. For details visit www.muswellmanor.co.uk
