Gillingham manager Martin Allen heaped praise on his squad after they showed immense character to leave Rotherham with a 2-1 victory on Saturday.
Results elsewhere meant Gills restored their five-point lead at the head of nPower League 2 after Deon Burton bagged to excellent goals either side of the break, while Gills remained disciplined and committed enough to withstand a barrage from Steve Evans’ side after the break.
They also saw out more than 11 minutes of injury-time at the end of the game after midfielder Romain Vincelot was stretchered-off after being knocked unconscious in a challenge for which Jason Taylor was booked.
Allen admitted: “It was backs to the wall at times. We took our chances when they came our way. Everyone to a man in our squad has played their part today.”
The delighted Gills boss – who ran onto the pitch to celebrate with the 511 travelling Gills fans at the final whistle – said: “Rotherham are the form team in the division, they are very direct, they don’t play any football, but they have got some good players up here, they pay out a lot of money, and it’s a difficult game.
“On the counter attack we looked dangerous, from set-pieces we looked dangerous and that Deon Burton and Danny Kedwell partnership proved to be decisive.
“Deon will get the credit but the keeper’s pulled off one brilliant save but the whole team and the subs that went on all did well.”
Allen revealed Vincelot had been taken to hospital after the game but has regained consciousness and added: “Hopefully he’s going to be ok.”
