Kent NHS services struggle to cope with high number of patients

People in Kent are being advised to stay away from emergency health services, as staff struggle to cope with a high number of patients.

A spokesman for the NHS in Kent and Medway said A&E units, NHS 111, 999 and out of hours services are all experiencing very high levels of demand.

The NHS is asking patients who do not need urgent treatment to leave these services free for those who really need them.

A spokesman said: "GP practices are open as usual again tomorrow (December 29). They will always try to fit you in, if you need to be seen the same day.

"Local pharmacies can offer a wealth of health support and should be the first port of call for common illnesses such as coughs and colds. Supermarkets also sell a range of over the counter medicines to help relieve symptoms.

"If you need urgent treatment for a minor injury such as a cut, strain or burn, you can visit a minor injuries unit or walk in centre which are open throughout the festive period.

"Patients can check opening times, or seek advice for common symptoms by using our Health Help Now app – available from the App Store and Google Play, or at www.healthhelpnow-nhs.net."
