Power workers face the axe

MORE than 40 workers at Grain power station face losing their jobs within the next two weeks after it was announced the plant is to be mothballed by owners PowerGen.

Some of the 41 people involved are expected to take early retirement and others may move to Kingsnorth, Hoo, after Grain is closed down.

The company hopes to avoid redundancies, but cannot exclude them. The oil-fired station had been working on half capacity for some time. One of the two remaining generating units was switched off this week. The other will stop producing electricity by the end of the month.

The workforce has become the latest victim of over-capacity in the power industry.
