London Broncos joined Gillingham for a training session on Tuesday – and it could be the start of a long and lasting friendship.

Rugby league side Broncos face Warrington Wolves in a Super League match at Priestfield on June 8 and Gills chairman Paul Scally is keen for them to return permanently.

The Broncos played an ‘on the road’ game against Hull at Priestfield last season. They return with the possibility of making Gillingham their permanent home.

Mr Scally has for several years tried to forge links with a rugby club and, with the Broncos homeless from next season, he sees them as ideal partners.

"When the opportunity to host a Broncos game came along I thought this would be a good opportunity to test the water," said Mr Scally, who held fruitless talks with both Gravesend and Canterbury rugby union teams.

A crowd of 3,930 came to last season’s match as the Broncos narrowly lost to Hull.

Mr Scally said: "It was so successful that it only reiterated my desire to perhaps bring rugby to Kent as well, partly for commercial reasons and partly because I think it would be good for everyone."

The Broncos have already played games at Molesey Road, home of Esher rugby club and Wycombe Wanderers’ Adams Park. They played at Leyton Orient last year but neither pulled in the crowd that attended Priestfield.

"It’s a decision Broncos have to make," said the Gills chairman. I have reiterated to them it would have to be a long-term arrangement. They are looking for a permanent home to build a base and that would be great for every rugby-loving school and club in the county."
