Prison officer in dock on drugs charge

A 25-year-old prison officer has appeared in court charged with taking drugs into the jail where he is employed.

Martin Nelson spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth when he appeared at Sittingbourne Magistrates' Court charged with possession with intent to supply.

Nelson was allegedly found with 991g of cannabis resin in his possession during a routine check at HMP Swaleside, Eastchurch, on Wednesday, January 11.

Nelson has been suspended from his job and been bailed to return to the court on March 6 where he will be committed to crown court.
