STUDENTS at a Kent school have won a national prize for their ability to give tips on how to look after pets.

Grange Park School in Leybourne, near West Malling, was recognised as the best school for the Teacher’s Pet Competition during National Pet Month.

It was run by national charity, Lams, which promotes responsible pet ownership.

The school was one of many across the country that produced scrap books reflecting the charity’s top tips for responsible pet ownership.

These include protecting pets against disease and grooming them regularly.

Teresa Ostridge, a teacher from Grange Park, said: "A total of 28 pupils were involved in the project and they really enjoyed the work.

"Many of the children respond particularly well to animals and succeeding in a challenge like this will be a real boost to their confidence."

One of the National Pet Month trustees, Nicole Harrison who visited Grange Park to present the prizes and certificates, said:"Pet ownership can be incredibly beneficial for children, from giving them a sense of responsibility at a young age to increased sociability.

"The competition helps educate children in a fun way on how to look after their pets."

Under the banner of ‘Great British Pets’, National Pet Month 2008 will run from April 5 to May 5. To find out how you can get involved, visit www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk
