THE Duke of Edinburgh was at Chatham's Historic Dockyard to unveil the National Destroyer Memorial.

Created in bronze by sculptor Kenneth Potts, the memorial commemorates the 142 Royal Naval Destroyers sunk during the Second World War, and the crewmen who died.

It is positioned alongside HMS Cavalier, the only Second World War destroyer still surviving.

After the unveiling on Wednesday, the Duke, who served aboard destroyers during the war, toured the ship.

He then met fellow wartime destroyer veterans and family members of those who died while serving on destroyers.
