Rail commuters faced major delays as firefighters tackled a blaze at London Bridge station.

All services in and out of London Bridge, Charing Cross and Cannon Street stations were suspended and instead were diverted to London Victoria.

Dartford Messenger reporter Danny Boyle was stuck at Dartford train station. He described commuters as being "packed in like sardines on the platform" and said there was little information being provided to passengers.

He added: "Commuters at Dartford were angry that, despite assurances from rail staff, their train tickets were not valid on Fastrack bus services to Gravesend."

The blaze was under railway arches at London Bridge station and gas cylinders were thought to be involved.

A statement on Southeastern's website on Wednesday afternoon said: "Based on advice received from London Fire Brigade and Network Rail we have now begun to run normal services.

We are aiming to run a normal peak service tonight from all our stations. However all services will still be subject to delays and last minute cancellations."

Southeastern tickets are being accepted on all London Underground and Docklands Light Railway services.

Meanwhile, there is also chaos on the roads in north Kent.

It comes after 100 litres of diesel was spilt on a main road after a crash involving a lorry on Tuesday night.

The A206 University Way in Dartford close to junction 1a of the M25 is shut as 16 tonnes of sand had to be laid to deal with the incident.

Police originally said the road would be reopened at around noon but at around 2pm said it would remain closed until Thursday morning.

Elsewhere, drivers are struggling to travel on a road linking Maidstone and Medway after three cars were involved in an accident.

Police were called to Boxley Road, at Boxley Hill around 9.30am Wednesday after reports of a Nissan Micra and two Volkswagen Polos being involved in a crash.

Police also said a Dutch-registered lorry has broken down near the scene of the accident with a punctured tyre.

There are no reports of any injuries or damage to the cars. Drivers are able to pass the accident but only just.

Karen Morritt, who works in Maidstone and was caught up in the tailbacks, said she had to drive off the side of the road and along a muddy bank to inch past.
