Margate’s arts scene gains a glittering new addition this weekend.

Celestial Radio, described by its creators as a disco ball on water, consists of a sailing ship covered in 60,000 mirror tiles and a soundtrack which will be broadcast across Thanet on 87.7FM.

The Celeste will sail into Margate Harbour on Saturday and artists Zoë Walker and Neil Bromwich will speak to passers-by on the Harbour Arm at 1pm.

Local people can interact with the artwork by tuning into a special soundpiece, at home or in their cars, which combines music with a discussion about famous Kent visionaries including JMW Turner, TS Eliot and HG Wells.

Zoë said: “The soundtrack uses a lot of music from the 1960s and 1970s and the pirate radio era. It’s quite psychedelic and abstract in a way but I think people should be able to follow the narrative.

“A lot of visionary painters and writers have lived around Kent, so we’ve looked at their lives and local landscapes and Celestial Radio is a journey that links all of these elements together.”

The Celeste will remain in Margate Harbour until Tuesday before continuing onto Folkestone Harbour for the Folkestone Triennial.
