"If we can't win in the Medway Towns we are not going to have a
Labour government again" - that's the view of Labour leader
hopeful David Miliband on a visit to Rochester today
(Saturday).

Mr Miliband was speaking to voters along the High
Street to find out why they did or did not vote for his
party.

Ed Miliband, his brother, yesterday announced his intention to
battle David for the role of Labour leader.

Arriving at Rochester station, David Miliband walked down the
High Street speaking to voters about their concerns before hosting
a meeting in the Visitor Centre where he spoke to both Labour and
non-Labour constituents.

Speaking after the meeting, he said: "I think we've got to
accept that we got a kicking and we do accept we got a kicking.

"There were a range of reasons that were put forward, people
felt that we had become disconnected from the aspirations and hopes
of too many voters.

"Some of the voters I have met have told me that, and they have
raised issues like housing, education, immigration, also pocket
book issues where people felt that we were not really offering the
sort of change the country needed and that's something we have to
take very seriously."

Mr Miliband was also asked what he offered that his brother did
not, but brushed off the question, saying: "I'm not going to say
anything negative about any of the other candidates but what I am
going to say about myself is that I think I can rebuild Labour to
be the great reforming champion of social and economic change in
this country."
