Weather warning for heavy rain issued for Kent by Met Office as county is hit by flooding and road and train services disrupted

Wet and windy weather hit Kent today, causing problems on the county's roads and rails.

Travel disruption caused by the treacherous conditions affected a number of roads, with police urging people to take extra care.

Passengers also faced disruption on the county's rail network due to fallen trees and a landslip.

Two lanes were closed on the A20 Broadway at the bottom of Rocky Hill, Maidstone after a blocked drain caused the road to partially flood.

There were queues on Tonbridge Road and London Road and water was spotted pouring into the nearby subway.

Trees on the tracks near Maidstone East and on the line between Strood and Maidstone West also caused disruption to services.

Operator Southeastern also warned passengers of cancellations, delays and diversions due to a faulty train at Paddock Wood and signalling problems at Headcorn.

Some roads are also experienced flooding, including The Esplanade in Rochester. A burst water main in Pier Road, Gillingham did not help.

A yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office, which advises people to be aware of potential hazards and to check latest weather forecasts. It lasted until noon.

This morning, drivers heading back to work after the bank holiday weekend were greeted by lengthy queues caused by a series of crashes.

On the M20, at junction 2 for Brands Hatch, a crash involving a car and a lorry caused jams. The road was closed for a short time at about 7.50pm. Flooding on the sliproad also caused delays.

Elsewhere, on the London-bound A2 between Boughton and Brenley, a car smashed into the central reservation at around 7.20am, prompting police to cone off the outside lane. The carriageway is now fully open.

The A249 was blocked southbound after an accident involving one car under the bridge at Key Street, between the B2005 and A2 Key Street Roundabout.

Police and ambulance crews attended, and a man was taken to hospital. All lanes have now reopened and delays cleared by 8.30am.

And there were queues on the M20 due to an accident, London-bound between J5 A20 for Aylesford and J4 A228 for Leybourne and Snodland.
